“What if Jack didn’t climb up the beanstalk?”

About The Book

Riffing off the old familiar fairy tale, Beanstalk is a middle-grade contemporary fantasy adventure. When Jackie's dog disappears down a mysterious hole drilled by a supercharged beanstalk, he and his friend Pete set out to find him.

Little children sit on tiered benches in front of a large firepit. Their shadows dance across the stone wall behind them. An elderly man is on the other side of the fire performing a magic trick. His voice is commanding. The children are mesmerized.

The short white beard and white ring of hair around his otherwise bald head suggest he is in his early sixties. His beard has no mustache. It sprouts jauntily from under his jawline and reaches from ear to ear. He is dressed in a pale tunic, baggy britches, and short boots. Merry blue eyes and apple cheeks give him a playful look suitable for his act. With his wig and a wizard hat, some in the audience may fail to recognize Sumner Blanc as the Magic Man.

His audience is mostly children—baby ogres, young fairies and gnomes. These children see the differences between themselves as normal. Their shadows on the stone wall create a collage of moving shapes—conical, square, pointy, and angular—all mixing together as they enjoy the show. Being human, the man does not share a bloodline with the ogres, gnomes, or fairies. As the Magic Man, he has watched generations grow up before his eyes. Many of them stand now, watching their children watch him. He finishes his sleight of hand to their innocent astonishment. They love him. When he rises to pack his magic bag, the kids clamber for more, as he knew they would. “Magic Man! Magic Man! Tell us the story again!” “Okay, okay.” He gently quiets them and sits back down. He begins, “Once upon a time…”

About the Authors

Friends for many years, they began creating screenplays when both of their families were young, (mostly as therapy). They would grab time whenever family and work allowed and imagined what they wanted to see in movies or on TV. They shared a mutual passion for creating stories. As an elementary school teacher for many years, Linda taught every grade from kindergarten to sixth. Catherine’s background, on the other hand, is in project management and business administration. In 2008, they combined their skill sets and started A Teaching Tree, which supplied teachers with classroom aids and curricula. During the Covid lockdown, they decided to adapt one of their screenplays, into their first middle-grade novel, Beanstalk. They originally saw this wholesome re-imagined fairy tale as a possible Disney vehicle but fell in love with it as a book. It was so much more fun to write, that they even added the potential for a sequel.
